Simpatica

Simpatica is a Catana 471 Owner’s Version from 2001 (hull number 42). She was built for Bruce Cunard, who ordered it in March of 2000 when there was a 15 month wait for a boat. Bruce hired a surveyor to oversee the construction of the boat at the factory. It was launched on July 3, 2001, on Sam Cunard’s 9th birthday. Bruce and his family sailed the Med, across the Atlantic, the Caribbean, up the US East Coast to New York City for over a year before taking Simpatica to their home in Annapolis, MD.

We bought Simpatica from Bruce in October 2003 and took her to Ft. Lauderdale where we spend 6 months getting her ready for our circumnavigation. On May 2004 we finally set sail and almost 3 years later we sailed back into port after a succesful cirumanvigation. Simpatica exceeded all our expectations sailing around the world; she is a fast, comfortable and seaworthy boat who took us through all possible kind of seas and places with ease and confidence.

Simpatica is particulary well equipped for long range cruising, especially to far off places where diesel, water and provisions in general are hard to get or of dubious quality.

As expamples of this, the energy on the boat is planned around the concept of Energy Unlimited , in which the core of the energy system are the batteries, all sources of power actually simply charge the batteries, and all consuption of power draws from the batteries including AC through an inverter. The boat has a 12v diesel battery charger, both engines have an extra alternator, there are 8 solar panels and the can be pluged to 110v or 220v shore power anywhere on the world. And all critical systems are fully backed-up.

Other Information
The outer hulls molds and one inner hull-bridge deck mold are vacuum-bagged using vinylester resin cored with PVC closed-cell foam with unidirectional cloth for outer laminate and Twaron aramid cloth for inner laminate.

The separately molded daggerboards trunks are laminated to be seven times stronger than the daggerboards. The spade rudders have self-adjusting JP3 bushings with Lecombe & Schmidt dual hydraulic steering coupled to wood-trimmed carbon fiber wheels.

The deck/coachroof is a one-piece mold, vacuum-bagged with unidirectional cloth for outer laminate and Twaron aramid cloth for inner laminate and molded diamond pattern non-skid decks.

The deck-to-hull joint is bonded fiberglass creating a seamless waterproof and rigid structure.

The Catana 471’s innovations include total mainsail management from the safety of the cockpit via a two speed electric winch, wide clean flat decks with all sail control lines lead aft under the deck with no lines and no hatches to trip over. Catana’s ocean view port lights provide excellent ventilation into the lower hulls. The two outer hull molds and one inner hull/bridgedeck mold are vacuum bagged using vinylester resin, cored with closed cell foam with unidirectional cloth for outer laminate & Twaron aramid cloth for inner laminate. The separately molded daggerboard trunks are laminated to be seven times stronger than the daggerboards. The Daggerboards are reversible in event of damage due to a grounding. All bulkheads are cored Nidacore honeycomb core with carbon fiber on both sides. The deck/coachroof is a one piece mold, vacuum-bagged using vinylester resin, cored with Nidacore honeycomb with unidirectional cloth for outer laminate & Twaron aramid cloth for inner laminate, and molded diamond pattern non-skid decks. The deck to hull joint is bonded by fiberglass creating a seamless leak proof and thus waterproof structure.
Catana’s assymetrical hull hull shape, tulip shaped bows, and weight placement ensures a better motion at sea and less hobby-horsing. Catana’s daggerboards greatly increases windward pointing & headway making capabilities, while offering added safety in storm sea conditions.

Catana’s exclusive use of the aramid fiber Twaron for the inner laminate of the entire structure, along with a Divinycell closed cell foam core, and foam cored furniture insures fast cruising speeds while providing luxurious accommodations and all of the creature comforts one would like to have.
